Kelly Meek ‘87 has written her first children’s book, titled “Night-Night Little Baby Puppy.” Meek said that she decided to write a bedtime story when she realized how much time she was spending trying to get her daughter to sleep. In order to get her daughter to take naps she would spend an hour a day walking her daughter in a stroller until she fell asleep. Recognizing that this was only a temporary solution, this prompted her to put that time to use in thinking of a way to promote sleep differently in her daughter. The project of writing a children’s story fulfilled Meek’s mission of using her mind well during those long strolls and allowed her to develop a way to make sleep more appealing to her daughter.
Kelly is a psychologist, but professes that she was not aspiring to use psychological theory in the writing of this book. She said that she did what most moms and dads would do and listened to her daughter and what interests her.

William Atwell ’01-- I'm a 2LT in the Field Artillery (FA), and was commissioned in August of 2007. I'm now stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany, which is a small town in northern Bavaria (Bayern), a southern state in Germany. I'm attached to Charlie Company, 1-2 IN (1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment), and I am their fire support officer (FSO). I have a ton of jobs right now within the company that I'm responsible for. I plan indirect fire missions to either protect our forces in a defensive position, or I plan fires to support offensive operations. I also go wherever the Company Commander goes, so you could say I'm almost like his shadow. The Company Commander has to be right in the middle of any offensive operation, so he can best control his men, and I'm right there with him. Part of my job is to be a forward observer (FO), which means as artillery rounds or mortar rounds impact, I'm watching the round impact, and making corrections if there are any errors in range or deviation. Usually I'm only about 800 meters away from this, but depending on the size of the round, I can be as close as 100 meters. Things can get pretty intense very quickly. When I go to Iraq, I'll also be the Information Operations (IO) Officer. That is a very broad position spanning fields such as intelligence, civil affairs, home operations (which is providing information to family members back home or Germany on how we're doing, and providing small things to my soldiers to make life in Iraq easier such as posting scores to football games from their home towns or favorite colleges), and contracting. Right now I'm the acting executive officer (XO) while our real XO is going to pathfinder school at Fort Benning in GA. That is a whole different beast of a job. So life is pretty busy for me right now, and I'm just living the Infantryman's life right now in the field. We got to go home on the 7th of September (an early birthday present for me since mine is on the 16th).Now, we're just getting ready to go to Iraq, which should be sometime in November/December.
Stephen Deuble ’02—is a 1st Lieutenant with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. He has been in Iraq for a year and has a 15 month deployment. His area of operation is in the Ninevah Province. He should be coming home mid-January—February 1, 2009.
Claire Teschel ’02— I graduated from FSU in 2006 with my B.A. in Advertising and a minor in Psychology. Then I came to Savannah College of Art and Design in September of 2006 and began my M.A. in Advertising Design. I just finished my degree this past March. During my time at SCAD, I explored a few different directions in my work. One of my most recent projects deal with paint chips (yes, paint chips) and is based mainly in collage. This project entitled "More Than Just A Color" unifies the name of the paint chip to either a visual or a phrase. I also am developing my own line of stationery called "dot + jim" named after my grandparents. For a better understanding, feel free to take a peek at my site claireteschel.com. My work is currently selling at shopSCAD (a boutique in Savannah and Atlanta) and on Etsy.com. :)
Next week I'm starting my job as Line Designer at American Greetings. The position entails of mix of marketing, branding, and design for a company called Photoworks, which American Greetings bought in January.
Currently I'm working as a Line Designer for American Greetings headquarters in Cleveland, OH. I've been working there 4 months now, and have designed various Christmas cards, photo books, and mousepads through my department PhotoWorks. I'm also assisting with the Christmas and Valentine's retail program in Carlton Cards stores nationwide.
Aside from working with American Greetings, I'm also creating own line of collage prints which are on my website: claireteschel.com.
